Clean Diesel Technology Nonroad Field Demonstration Program
Emisstar partnered with Southern Research Institute (SRI) to design, develop and implement a comprehensive diesel aftertreatment retrofit program in the New York Metropolitan Area (NYMA). Co-sponsored and funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the US EPA, the program achieved the goals of identifying and assessing the in-use performance of 27 diverse PM and NOx-reduction diesel emissions control technologies on six different nonroad equipment types.
Program-specific milestone successes included:
• Evaluating and ranking control technologies based upon emissions reduction performance, durability, applications feasibility, cost, ease of maintenance, fuel economy impacts and ARB/EPA verification status;
• Developing testing protocols that will become paradigms to guide data collection and evaluation efforts for other programs of this type; and
• Performing in-use nonroad equipment operational assessment and emissions testing and analysis to validate control technology performance.
This demonstration program highlighted non-road emission control technology performance by showcasing both commercially available US EPA and California Air Resource Board-verified technologies, as well as novel technologies that may see commercialization in the coming years. Additionally, the in-use emissions testing component quantified actual control technology performance in real-world use, providing a valuable public policy tool for New York State in developing programs to improve public health and the environment.
